A beautiful study of a parliament of Owls by Walter Lindner (1936-2007).

Walter Lindner was born and raised in Berlin during the Second World War, spending much of his early childhood with family in rural Germany. An only child, he went on to study at both the State Academy of Fine Art and Berlin University of the Arts during the 1950s, before becoming a senior graphic designer in the advertising department at Siemens, Berlin.

In 1967, Lindner embarked on a career as an independent artist, working alongside his wife, fellow artist and illustrator Maria. Over the following four decades, he developed a distinctive approach to printmaking, perfecting the monotype process and embracing the unpredictability of the hand-pressed image. Each work was then individually embellished by the artist, resulting in unique and highly individual pieces, with a depth of texture and character rarely achieved through conventional painting.

Lindner exhibited annually at the Frankfurt International Art Fair for some forty years, becoming one of its longest-standing exhibitors. Despite considerable commercial success, he remained a relatively private and understated figure, seemingly content to let the work speak for itself.

His artworks are often decorative and playful, with an exuberance and occasional satirical quality that gives them a distinctive character. Working across paper, canvas and print, Lindner left behind a remarkable body of work, each piece bearing the unmistakable individuality of his hand.

Berlin’s relative isolation from the international art world during the years of the Wall undoubtedly limited his wider recognition. Had he sought it, greater acclaim may well have followed, but Lindner remained a quietly industrious and enigmatic artist, leaving behind a wonderful legacy of distinctive and exceptional artworks.

Excellent condition, housed in a beautiful period frame and behind museum grade AR glass.
