History of the Trefriw Woollen Mills:
It is one of the few remaining traditional working woollen mills in Wales, known for producing authentic Welsh bedspreads, tapestry blankets, tweeds, and travelling rugs. It has been operational since 1859.
History & Operation: Although the Williams family took over in 1859, the site had been operating for over 30 years prior as a "pandy" (fulling mill). It transitioned from a finishing mill to a full production facility, processing raw wool through carding, spinning, and weaving.
Family Business: Following Thomas Williams, the mill has remained in the family for generations, continuing to produce traditional Welsh designs, including the "Caernarfon" tapestry pattern.
Water-Powered: The mill continues to use the adjacent River Crafnant to generate its own electricity via a hydro-electric turbine.
Visitor Attraction: The mill is open to the public, allowing visitors to view the weaving machinery, the turbine house, and a "Weaver's Garden".
