Sussex Corner chair by Ford Madox Brown.

A 19th Century Sussex corner chair by Ford Madox Brown (1821 - 1893) for Morris & Co.

The chair has two sides decorated with turned rails and two cruciform back supports, its original & removable drop-in rush seat with the legs tapering to small turned feet.

Similar in style to the “Argylle” chairs (see plate 212 p. 136 “English Furniture 1880 – 1915” by Pauline Agius, published by  Antique Collector’s Club, 1978) which appeared in Liberty’s catalogues c. 1890 “Dining Room and Library Furniture”, although these, like the Morris & Co. Sussex type rush-seated furniture, had rush seats fastened directly to the wood framework, not a drop-in rush seat like you see here.

Ford Madox Browns work appears in many museums such as the V&A and MoMA.

A  beautiful & highly sort after piece of any interior these chairs do not crop up very often at all. Especially with its original drop in rush-seat and in such sturdy condition with only the usual minor wear to the beech frame.
