Slipper chair by Gillows.
Slipper chair by Gillows.
A 19th century aesthetic movement slipper chair by the royal warrent holder furniture company Gillows of Lancaster.
When we bought this chair we could see both back legs were stamped, one with the makers mark L5988 which using Susan Stuart’s book on Gillows we can decipher that this chair was indeed by Gillows and made in 1877-1878.
The other leg you’d expect to be therefore stamped Gillows or Gillow or Gillows of Lancaster but no, it was stamped with another makers name. Again, using Susan Stuart’s research book we found out that this particularly journeymen went by two different names, and although it was rare for journeymen working for the company to sign their work, this man did - W.Brumfitt.
The upholstery when we bought it was ruined so we had this chair reupholstered in a wonderful gingerbread Mohair Velvet. There is wonderful detail all over the chair and has been crafted in the highest manner.
Interestingly, when we removed its original upholstery we found “Gillows of Lancaster” written in pencil on the frame, which we have now left exposed for you to enjoy.
You can see works from Gillows in many of the top country houses in the uk, national trust properties, government buildings and museums such as the V&A.
