Irish Vernacular “Carpenters” Chair.
Irish Vernacular “Carpenters” Chair.
A rare early Irish “carpenters” chair. Retaining most of its original red paint, this achingly beautiful chair has the most wonderful front stretcher which are almost always missing from these pieces of furniture.
Due to wars in the 17th century furniture production like this started later on the timeline than English, Welsh & Scottish counterparts. There were also a lot less (good) furniture makers in Ireland than the rest of the British isles.
Painted furniture was used not only as decoration but to protect it from the elements, giving it a rugged, historical and absolutely beautiful timeworn appearance if it’s fortunate to have survived to today.
Ireland, 19th century.
