An exceptional and highly desirable example of late 18th to early 19th-century English vernacular furniture, this historic Cornish lacemaker's table (or candle stand) is packed with regional character and historic utility.
Crafted from richly patinated dark-stained solid timber, the table features a distinctive octagonal tray top with a subtly raised molded edge—historically designed to prevent a lacemaker’s delicate bone bobbins, pins, and needles from rolling onto the floor. The top rests upon a beautifully turned central baluster and bobbin pedestal column.
True to classic Cornish construction, the pedestal is securely tenoned into a heavy, thick circular "stool" platform base. This low, dense platform lowers the center of gravity to prevent the table from tipping over when supporting a heavy glass lacemaking condenser flask (or "flash globe").
The entire piece is elevated by three splayed jointed legs, ensuring absolute stability on uneven flagstone floors (the same as cricket tables).
It is a highly original & untouched historic example with wonderful wear and age-related character marks, this rare survivor is a stellar piece of regional social history.
