An exceptional monumental Indo-Persian tinned copper charger of exhibition scale, probably produced in Kashmir during the late nineteenth century, circa 1870–1900.

Measuring an impressive 87cm (34¼ inches) in diameter, this is a remarkably large example of traditional qalamzani (hand-engraved and chased) metalwork. The charger displays an extraordinary level of craftsmanship, with every surface enriched by intricate engraving executed entirely by hand.

At its centre is a beautifully composed Persianate figural scene depicting elegantly dressed figures within a wooded landscape. The scene is surrounded by multiple concentric borders filled with finely engraved floral ornament, scrolling foliage and repeating medallions, creating an exceptionally rich decorative composition that rewards close inspection.

The charger is crafted from heavy-gauge copper with its original tinned surface, now displaying a wonderfully mellow soft grey patina that has developed naturally over many decades. The broad hand-worked rolled rim provides both structural strength and an attractive sculptural edge, while the untouched surface preserves the depth and character of the engraving exceptionally well.

Examples of this scale are increasingly difficult to find, particularly with such finely executed decoration and an honest, unpolished surface. Whether displayed above a fireplace, in a stair hall or as a statement piece within a contemporary interior, it possesses a remarkable presence.
