Large Vintage Soumak Rug, c.1980 and most probably from Afghan.

Handwoven wool in a striking Caucasian-inspired geometric design with soft duck-egg blue and rust tones.

A striking handwoven Afghan Soumak rug dating from around 1980, woven in the traditional weft-wrapping (Soumak) technique after 19th-century Caucasian prototypes. The bold geometric field is centred by three stylised medallions framed within multiple angular borders, rendered in an elegant palette of soft duck-egg blue, terracotta, chocolate brown and ivory.

Flatwoven in hand-spun wool, the rug displays the characteristic textured surface and richly patterned reverse associated with the Soumak technique. Its generous proportions, balanced composition and unusually soft colour palette make it particularly well suited to both contemporary and traditional interiors.

Retaining its original fringes and presented in very good vintage condition with only light, age-appropriate wear.

Originally retailed by Cadry’s Persian Carpet Specialists, Sydney, Australia, one of Australia’s long-established oriental carpet dealers, with the original retailer’s label still present to the reverse, providing an interesting piece of provenance.

A beautifully decorative example of late 20th-century Afghan weaving, combining traditional Caucasian-inspired design with exceptional versatility for modern interiors.

Dimensions (approximately):

  • Woven area: approximately 250 × 170 cm
  • Overall (including fringes): 265 × 170 cm
