An exceptional example of Cotswold School furniture by renowned master craftsman Hugh Birkett.

Measuring:

189.5cm diameter

70cm high

50cm deep

The oak sideboard with chip carved banding to the top, four panelled doors, with turned handles enclosing shelves and four brass ring pulled drawers.

Hugh Birkett (1919-2002) was one of the 20th century’s best Cotswold School furniture makers, his work strongly influenced by icons of the Arts & Crafts furniture world like Ernest Gimson & Edward Barnsley. He created traditionally crafted clocks, cabinets, furniture & was also a book binder.

Birkett was born in Solihull and briefly attended the Birmingham School of Furniture where he became an apprentice to Oliver Morel. He then established his own workshop in Lapworth, Warwickshire in 1949.

In 1966, he moved to Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds, where he spent decades designing and creating bespoke, handmade pieces. His privately commissioned pieces feature the date and his signature - such as seen here with this beautiful oak sideboard.

This one-off is a fine display of Cotswold School furniture and is presented in excellent condition. There is very limited signs of use, with just one fine split to the top and side as pictured. All locks, drawers and doors work smoothly and this is a great chance to own a commissioned collectors piece.

Collection available at our London gallery by appointment. Worldwide delivery available, not included. Please enquire for a delivery quote if needed prior to purchasing. Very good condition with signs of use as to be expected. One split to the top & right hand side. Stable.
