Aesthetic Movement Sussex Type Chair.

A scarce variation of an aesthetic movement / arts & crafts chair in the “Sussex” style with ring turned “Thebes” style legs, hand woven rush seat and a rare to see inward curving stretcher (as seen on earlier crinoline stretchers of the Windsor type chairs). 

English, late 19th to early 20th century.

Sussex chairs were adapted in the 1860s by Philip Webb for William Morris's firm, Morris & Co., taking inspiration from an old farmhouse chair found in rural Sussex. The Thebes style legs were a favourite of people like Christopher Dresser who’s designs embodies a lot of ebonised & Egyptian revival styles.

Have never seen this model before and multiple trusted academics also cannot find any literature on this model. Possibly a one off.
