Fine alternating timber stringing runs around the moulded edge of the top and continues throughout the drawer fronts, uprights and legs. Perhaps most unusually, Barnsley carried this decoration around the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003esides and back of the desk\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, demonstrating that the piece was conceived as a fully finished, freestanding object.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe desk comprises a broad central writing drawer flanked by two banks of three drawers, each retaining its original period escutcheons and ring-pull handles. The detail on the metalwork is beautiful and the drawers run the whole depth of the desk. The beautifully figured walnut is complemented by the intricate geometric inlay, creating the characteristic combination of natural materials, visible craftsmanship and restrained ornament associated with the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCotswold School of furniture\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003eA remarkable story of commission and provenance:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe desk carries the inscription \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“OP 3 E 9, 1909”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e to the rear, corresponding to its original recipient, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOscar Philip Eckhard\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, who was born in 1888. Contemporary auction provenance records that the desk was purchased by \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMrs A. L. Eckhard’s connection with Cambridge is independently reflected in the archives of Trinity College, Cambridge, which records him as a contemporary figure and friend of the historian and philosopher \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGoldsworthy Lowes Dickinson\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e The desk was sold once through Sotherbys in Belgravia, London and we have the catalogue in the desk. Since then it has been privately owned and is now offered once more.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe family connection also provides a fascinating insight into how this commission may have come about. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOscar Eckhard’s mother moved within the same Arts and Crafts social circle as the architect and designer C. F. A. Voysey.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Given Voysey’s close connection with the wider Arts and Crafts world, and his association with figures including Sidney Barnsley, it is a compelling possibility that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eVoysey introduced Mrs Eckhard to Barnsley\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, leading to the commission of this highly personal piece.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe desk was made during a particularly important period in the development of the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCotswold School\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. Sidney Barnsley was one of its defining designer-makers, working alongside his brother \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eErnest Barnsley and Ernest Gimson\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. BIFMO describes Sidney as an important Arts and Crafts designer-maker who worked at the bench making furniture of his own design, and identifies his work as fundamental to the development of the Cotswold craft tradition.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe relationship between Barnsley and Gimson was particularly close.
