Chinoiserie is a French term meaning “Chinese-esque” and is a European interpretation of Chinese art rather than direct representation. Mirrors were decorated with Chinoiserie scenes as a European interpretation of East Asian artistic traditions & therefore catered to the 17th & 18th century European fascination with the exotic far east.
Owning items with Chinoiserie designs was a status symbol showing your taste for the exotic, to show your perceived wealth and that perhaps you’d been on a “grand tour” to far flung & exotic places to educate yourself & bring home pieces of abroad for your own home.
